Carers Rights Day 2025 – Know Your Rights, Use Your Rights

Carers Rights Day is taking place on Thursday 20 November, and we are proud to join Carers UK and organisations across the country in shining a light on the vital role unpaid carers play every day.

An unpaid carer is anyone who provides unpaid support to a friend, family member, or neighbour who needs help due to illness, disability, a mental health problem, addiction, or old age. This support can range from a few hours a week to round-the-clock care and includes tasks like personal care, household chores, and emotional support.

Many people become carers without realising it and don’t identify themselves as a “carer” — they see themselves as a wife, husband or partner, a son or daughter, or a parent. Yet their role is vital for those who could not manage without their help.

As a result, they may miss out on crucial information, advice and practical help. That’s why Carers Rights Day is such an important opportunity to raise awareness and ensure no carer feels unsupported or alone.

This year’s theme, ‘Know your rights, use your rights’, is all about making sure more carers understand the support and entitlements available to them — and feel confident to use those rights when they need them most.

Carers Rights Day is a reminder that support is out there — and knowing your rights is the first step to using them.

We recognises how important it is to help carers and relatives with practical and emotional support. Often the best source of support is other carers in a similar situation to yourself. We hold carers support group meetings and one-to-one support for carers. These services are particularly helpful as they provide peer support from others in similar situations.
