Collecting Sponsorship

Thank you for supporting Headway Essex.

See below our useful tips to help maximise your fundraising.

All cheques should be made payable to Headway Essex.

Start as soon as possible. The more time you have the more successful you will be. Set yourself a target and break it down over a time line so that you know how much you might need to raise each week to hit the target. Be consistent and persistent!

Think about all the people that you know who could be potential sponsors – your family, friends, work colleagues, clubs, gyms or organisations you might be involved with. Plan your attack! You may find that it is those people who you thought would not sponsor you, end up being the ones who are the most generous! This type of fundraising always holds lots of surprises!

Don’t be shy - ask people to support you. Remember you are not asking for yourself - you are raising money to help improve the lives of people with brain injuries and their families and carers.

Always put your best sponsors at the top of the sponsorship form. If you start your sponsorship form with your higher pledges, other people will in time follow suit.

It will save you a massive amount of time and energy if your sponsors give you their pledge straight away, so that you don’t have to keep chasing them up after the event. This is a choice that you could offer them and many people are very happy to do this, particularly if you don’t see them regularly.

Ask people close to you to become your sponsorship team to help you with your fundraising. You could ask them to take sponsorship forms for you and circulate them amongst the people they know. You don’t have to do everything yourself! Make sure that you explain the importance of ticking the gift aid box to your team! Ask them to email your Justgiving page to their contacts and use Facebook too!

Online Sponsorship

Headway Essex has teamed up with justgiving.com so all our event participants can raise money quickly and easily online with their own personalised webpage.

Friends and family will be able to donate online with a credit or debit card – so for some people you will not have to run around with paper sponsorship forms, or chasing cheques and cash after the event!

To set up your page, visit http://www.justgiving.com/headwayessex/raisemoney.

Click on “create your page”. If you need any assistance the “How a page works – for fundraisers” should help. Or you can email: fundraising@headwayessex.org,uk for assistance.

The site will automatically calculate the Gift Aid on all those who have ticked the gift aid box on your justgiving page and all the donations on your page will go directly to Headway Essex in your name.

When using paper sponsorship forms, make sure you get everyone who is a tax payer to tick the gift aid box and Gift Aid it! Ask your sponsors to fill in their name and home address with postcode and tick the Gift Aid box if appropriate. "Sue at the Gym" won’t do!

With Gift Aid, the government will increase the value of each donation by 28 per cent as long as you have a home address for the individual. So, by ticking the Gift Aid box, a UK taxpayer’s pledge will be increased by almost a third – at no further cost to the person who has sponsored you.

Add a fundraising element to your e-mail signature so that you are always reminding everyone about your fundraising efforts!

Other Tips

Ask Headway for some literature about the charity, so you are informed about Headway’s work should anyone ask you any questions. You can also show people the literature as a few pictures can say a thousand words.

Think about where you work or any companies you know who might be able to give you sponsorship. If you do have contacts, focus on the managers who hold the purse strings for company budgets! Within your own company, they might match your fundraising pound for pound.

Some of your local companies or shops might give you raffle prizes for fundraising events.

Always keep people informed of what you are doing by promoting your event in any way possible. Put information on your staff notice board, in the staff canteen, or maybe through the company in-house magazine or keep in touch with your staff through email, don’t forget to add details on what you are doing to your email signature.

For people who you can’t see face-to-face, anywhere in the world, send them a letter outlining what you are doing, what you hope to raise and what the charity does or send an e-mail which may get an immediate response on your just-giving website.

Don’t be shy to follow up with another email or a phone call – people all have busy lives and may have genuinely forgotten all about it!
