Tips For Fundraising

The most successful events are often the ones which are simple ideas.

  • Try to be unique - people like to go to something a bit different.
  • It’s all in the planning!  Think through all the elements of your event.
  • Be enthusiastic – it can really catch on!
  • Ask your friends, colleagues and family what they think about your idea and if they would help or come to the event and build a team of helpers.
  • Ask people if you need help.
  • Get started early and set a target with key times when actions and amounts have to be achieved.
  • Think about how much you want to raise.
  • Work out a budget – how much will the event cost to run and how many tickets would you need to sell to break even.  See ‘Organising an Event’ for things you need to consider in your budget.
  • Keep good records and receipts of all monies received so that you can account for all your expenses.  If you are questioned on the amount raised you can show a clear record of all income and expenditure.  Cheques should be made payable to Headway Essex.
  • Keep your costs at a minimum, try and get what you need donated.
  • Are you confident that it will raise more than it costs?
  • Get as much publicity as you can
  • Always have some information about Headway in case anyone asks about the charity and its work.  Headway Essex can supply this.
  • If you are doing a sponsored event, use a Justgiving page and have your sponsorship forms with you at all times!  Headway Essex can give you a link to the Justgiving website.
  • It is important to get the Gift Aid box ticked if someone is a UK tax payer, we cannot claim Gift Aid unless this is done.
  • Make sure everyone who needs them has your contact details.
  • Face to face fundraising is best; it’s harder for people to say “NO”!
  • Always thank everyone who has helped you.  They are more likely to want to help you again if they are appreciated.
  • Let everyone know how well you did!
  • Headway Essex will send you a letter and certificate of thanks so that you can show your supporters.
