2010 is Headway Essex's 25th Anniversary - 25 years of care for people with brain injury and their families.
Colchester and North East Essex Headway was started by an occupational therapist as a Support Group meeting once a month, as part of Headway, the National Head Injuries Association.
A two-bedroomed bungalow, situated in the grounds of Severalls Hospital (a large Victorian psychiatric hospital), was leased from the local Health Authority.
The Headway House Day Centre had opened for two days a week, with an employed part-time co-ordinator and many volunteers recruited to help.
Headway Essex became a Registered Charity in its own right and a
Company Limited by Guarantee.
The Headway House Day Centre was open five days a week.
Family Support services were introduced with the recruitment of a part-time Family Support Worker.
The Headway House Day Centre was altered and extended to 1200 square
feet, double its original size.
A Fundraising office was opened and a full-time Fundraising Manager and a part-time assistant were recruited.
The Fundraising department moved to premises in Colchester town centre.
In order to support people in the rest of the county a change of name to Headway Essex was required.
Community Support Services were introduced across the county.
The Community Support Service relocated to the Town Office.
A Lottery Grant was awarded to increase the size of the day centre and add
more facilities to enable more people to be supported.
Headway Essex celebrated 20 years of brain injury care and support.
Day Care Services were temporarily relocated into Portacabins to enable
the extension building works to start. The extension was completed and
Day Care Services moved into the new building.
A new minibus was purchased.
Headway Essex was involved with the making of “Recovery” a 90 minute BBC Drama on the impact brain injury has on a family. Headway Essex hosted visits from researchers, the writer Tony Marchant, Film Director Andy de Emmoney and actor David Tennant, who as a result became Patron of Headway Essex.
The Community Support Service was restructured and set up with an outcomes focus.
25% more people with brain injury are supported than in the previous year.
Two new care officers recruited at the Day Centre in Colchester enabling more people to be supported.
An additional community support worker recruited for South Essex to help meet demand.
A Pilot Day Care Service launched in South Essex one day a week for 20 weeks
